“Is no one listening?!” sings Timothy Howls. He’s on fire with this new song. “Smithereens” is like barreling down an open dirt road, with nothing but anger in your back pocket. He sets his sights on the horizon, letting the sun burn his tracks behind him. “Pour on gasoline…” he vows to set the world on fire. His voice soars into the sky like fireballs flowing through clouds and crashing into the earth.
In the wake of grief, people often feel a rush of emotions. Some sadness and a pinch of anger. We all feel everything when given the chance. “These are troubled times, especially when you’re raising small children,” he writes on the official YouTube video. “However, I remain optimistic about the future of our country, the world, and our ability to send our kids into the unknown. I hope this song and video speak to you the way [they speak] to the band and [me].”
He further explains in a press statement: “With grief as the inspirational spark and anger as the fuel I wrote ‘Smithereens’ as a way to cope with the loss of someone close,” shares Howls. “It’s an imploring call out to God for understanding during a moment of confusion and heartache.”
