Van Darien has a way of bursting the speakers with her brand of Americana/rock static. With “End of the World,” guitars crash like thunder, and her voice is like lightning piercing the elemental ground with a shock to the system. “Everything beautiful and tragic / World’s broken at my feet by the time a storm reaches me,” she crows into a twister of sound.
“Standing still like the end of the world,” she sings in the chorus before unfolding another verse. “When the wolves have gone to bed, time falls underneath our head…” Darien lights a blaze beneath her tired and weary feet, pushing onward until there’s nothing left but scorched earth.
“End of the World” is another primer for her forthcoming album, bummertown.
