Lily Meola is no stranger to heartfelt songwriting, but her latest release, “Never Want This To Change,” taps into something deeper—something lasting. Out yesterday, the Maui-born rising star teams up with country outlaw icon Jamey Johnson for a stirring, slow-burning duet that feels equal parts classic and cutting-edge.
Drenched in emotional resonance and carried by Meola’s wistful vocals and Johnson’s timeless baritone, the track captures the ache of wanting to pause time when everything feels right.
“Sometimes in life, we can’t enjoy a moment to its fullest extent because there’s an inevitable, quiet loom in the back of our heads that the universe’s shoe will drop at any given time,” Meola tells Charted exclusively. “I’m well aware that the light can’t exist without the dark, and that can be a beautiful thing… but sometimes the moment is so good you wish it could live on forever and ever.
Their chemistry is undeniable, matched by a denim-drenched live performance video directed by Jace Kartye, where simplicity and sincerity take center stage.
She adds, “To have Jamey on this song was such a gift. His voice has been one of my all-time favorites for as many years as I can remember now… it has this essence to it that feels like some form of therapy—it’s strong and powerful yet feels like a warm hug all at once.”
Now on tour with the Outlaw Music Festival, Meola is sharing stages with Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams, Billy Strings, and more—an earned full-circle moment for the artist Nelson once called his protégé. With stops across California, Idaho, and Washington this month, the road ahead looks as promising as the music she’s making.
And it’s Johnson’s unmistakable baritone that tops off the track, bringing weight, wisdom, and warmth to an already soul-stirring song. Reflecting on the collaboration, Johnson shared: “It’s a great song, and Lily is a great singer and a great writer. There is something different about it and I really didn’t expect it… it just caught me by surprise.”
The two first recorded together in 2014, but Johnson says Meola’s evolution continues to impress. “She’s one of my favorite duet partners—so easy to sing with. Even in the studio, she makes everything so much fun and laid back.”
He adds, “While she’s a great pop singer, musically she reminds me more of a jazz singer. Somebody who can find little partials and notes where even great singers might miss. She reminds me of somebody like Ella Fitzgerald—a very smart, gifted musician.”
Already praised by Rolling Stone as “a genuine slow-burn saloon heartbreaker,” “Never Want This To Change” is yet another powerful step in Meola’s genre-defying career—blending country, pop, and Americana with a voice that feels instantly familiar yet completely her own.
From a childhood spent singing in Hawaiian cafes to standing shoulder-to-shoulder with country legends, Lily Meola’s journey has been anything but ordinary. And with “Never Want This To Change,” she’s delivered a reminder of why she’s one of the most exciting new voices on the rise.
