Sarah Darling‘s voice flutters over the iconic melody of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.” Angelic and soft, Darling reinvents the song as a plaintive plea. “The world was on fire, and no one could save me but you / It’s strange what desire will make foolish people do,” she offers in the first verse. Immediately, you sense that Darling has been singing this song for ages.
The chorus rushes in, with Darling trembling with emotion. “What a wicked game to play to make me feel this way / What a wicked thing to do to let me dream of you,” she sings. Darling paints with dark shadows, drenching the song with a somber mood and an earnest approach. It doesn’t take long for her to rip your heart out.
“Wicked Game” is “forever a classic,” she writes on Instagram. “The lyrics are ridiculously sexy and timeless.” She adds in a second post, sharing, “Warning: that riff is about to drop and it’s gonna be a whole vibe.”
