“Light me up and watch me burn!” crows Joey Myron over a dark, swampy production. “Watch Me Burn,” along with Lucky Dog, is a devilish performance, as it snarls and writhes in muddy instruments. Myron laments about heartbreak and sets his sights on delicious revenge – but to no avail. He only crashes and, well, burns.
“Think you got nothing to lose / Boy, you gettin’ barbecued / She’s cookin’, I know it,” he sings, moments before the chorus comes crashing through a wall of sound. The production playfully licks at Myron’s boots, conjuring up a smoky campfire that quickly surrounds him by the final few lines. It’s equal parts haunting and addicting. Myron chops up the lyrics, in time with the percussion, and rises just as wicked as the musical arrangement.
“Watch Me Burn” depicts “glorification of self sabotage,” Myron writes on Instagram. In a press statement, he elaborates further, saying, “The song plays with elements of the pain and pleasure paradox with an addiction to the toxicity of falling in ‘love’ and then ‘burning up’ from heartbreak. The story then turns to revenge but to no avail; as there is a false hope of getting back together only to fail once again.”
