Carly Pearce certainly knows her way around a melody. “No Rain” resonates like a tattered Patty Loveless song, as her songbird vocals emit a great emotional charge. “My mom always says that storms never stay,” she remembers in the second verse. “Don’t look to your left, this life ain’t a race.” A reflective, somber piece, “No Rain” unpacks the darkest parts of Pearce’s heart.
“If you never feel fear, you’ll never need faith, when I’m broken in two, when my sky ain’t blue…” she trails off before leaping back into the chorus. The lyrics are simple, as she flips through a laundry list of images. “No clouds, no lining / No dirt, no diamond / No low, no high / No wrong, no right,” she begins. Tears well up in her eyes, overflowing in due time, and leaving deep marks on her cheeks.
“No Rain” anchors a deluxe edition of Pearce’s Hummingbird album, available March 14.
