Willow Avalon delivers cheeky wordplay with her new song. “Baby Blue,” sampling her debut album Southern Belle Raisin’ Hell, toys with structure to deliver the hook. “Blue, baby, blue, that’s all I ever seem to make you,” she sings. Through a storm of emotion, she admits to always breaking her lover’s heart no matter what she does.
“You told me that you loved me on our very first date / Said, ‘You know when you know,’ and he didn’t wanna wait,” she remembers. “I thought that it was charming so I didn’t stop to think / That me, I wasn’t ready to bear that kind of weight.” The weight was irrefutably crushing, and she pushed forward as she waited to feel that same kind of love. But it never came. So, she broke his heart – over and over again.
On Instagram, Avalon wrote a lengthy post detailing how her debut album come to be. “The first song we ever had go viral was getting rich going broke, then tequila or whiskey, then Yodelayheewho, then homewrecker and now baby blue,” she concluded. “Yall have been consistent with making my dreams come true and everyone who has helped make this records dreams come true. We had our first big tour this year where we learned how hard this job is and how much we wanted it.”
