Jolted awake by a tumultuous year (remember 2020?!), Van Darien put pen to paper for her new song. “Bummertown” is perfectly low-key, a moody setpiece to her forthcoming album. The song echoes with its own musicality and primes the listener for what will surely be an album to watch. Darien’s voice glistens beneath caramel-colored production and offers a warmth that radiates from its core.

“Heavy trucks are passing / Clouds are hanging low,” she sings into a tunnel of sound. “Don’t know where my past is / But the heart is where I’m home / Warmth of sun all around / Damn, I’m feeling better now.” In pouring her heart out, every ache and growing pain, she learns to accept what is and that all bad things pass. It’s all temporary, after all.

The forthcoming album, written with Daniel Markham, promises to offer a roller coaster of emotions and styles. Her best yet? Time will tell.
