Myra Byrne unleashes the trans anthem in time for Pride Month. “Transsexual Blues,” which originated from a conversation with iconic Patrick Haggerty (of Lavender Country), seesaws over a set of strings and a buoyant melody line. “I’m way too f***inig famous to be this poor,” she sings.
In unpacking squelching feelings of being the token trans artist in the Americana scene, she allows herself to be raw, vulnerable, and a little bit pissed off. “You’re giving me the finger with your smile,” she sings with an icy tone. “I’m done with chasing shadows…”
Byrne lets the words burn on her tongue like acid. And when she lets go, they are so blinding, you can’t avoid them. “I can’t afford fun,” she later sings. There’s a sadness that’s laced in between each syllable that lingers in your eardrums long after the song is over.
