“I feel alive most of the time,” sings Kyle Kelly, his words spiraling through a guitar-soaked tunnel. In his new song “The Way It Is,” he admits that he accepts how things are. There’s no use in causing a fuss. The organ peeks through the arrangement, giving the song a slight gospel edge. “Getting high off the down lows,” he adds.

The amber, vintage feel of the song wraps you in intoxicating warmth. As the world feels troublesome every single day, you’ve just gotta go along for the ride. “Now, don’t misunderstand me, I’m not trying to complain / But when it all adds up and it ain’t enough, it’s a different kind of shame,” he continues. A plainspoken vocal licks at the eardrums, as Kelly builds a path forward.

On Instagram, he captions a video clip with the following words: “I know some of y’all feel the same way.” That’s the most important truth. Just look around. “The Way It Is” gives the listener courage but also a reprieve of the everyday stresses of living.
