“I hope you’re happy, wherever you are,” sings Cyndi Thomson. Instruments wrap around her like a million stars lining the cosmos. “Black Celica,” co-written with and featuring Ashley Monroe, twinkles with the dust covering an untouched mantel. Only time penetrates through the carefully drawn curtains. What once was a love burning from the inside out is only cold coals in an abandoned campfire pit.

Drums punctuate the earnest sway. Thomson’s voice commits to the performance, both the pain and joy of a once-lived life pouring from her soul. “My world was you / Ridin’ round in that car,” she sings. Thomson paints in specific details, enticing the listener to find themselves swept away to another time and place. The best music does that to you.

“Black Celica” samples Thomson’s comeback project, titled Acres of Diamonds EP. “I realized one day – I can’t expect my kids to chase their dreams if they don’t see me chasing mine,” the singer-songwriter shares in a press statement. “Leaving music wasn’t about the death of a dream. It was about self-preservation and making sure what was most important in life came first. But that fire, that passion inside of me for music, never left.”
