Sometimes, you just need a tune to remind you to get lost in the music. That’s the case with Miko Marks‘ version of Rance Allen’s “Let the Music Get Down in Your Soul.” It’s a timely message, particularly as the world seems to grow darker every day. Marks’ voice is hopeful, gleeful even. With a storm raging outside, the performance erects a musical shelter to hide from the downpour.
“Let it move you / Let it groove you,” Marks sings. A blinding radiance escapes the song’s soft edges. Marks breathes new life into the classic track, and it could not have come at a more opportune time. It’s a shot of adrenaline when you need it to get away from the world.
When Marks was 16 in Detroit, Michigan, she had the chance to perform with Allen in a gospel play called Mama Don’t. “This was one of my rare stage performances at that time, and to be able to sing with one of the greats in gospel music is a priceless memory,” she says in a press statement. “It reminds me of how music has, and always will be, a healer. As we navigate uncertainty and these tumultuous times in our country, I hope this song can be a sweet respite for the listener to retreat and find a little joy.”
