Here are 5 fresh songs to add to your playlist:
“Run!” – Betty Who”
“I just wanna run out of the darkness,” sings Betty Who over glistening synths. Ever the ’80s-influenced chantuese, the pop singer unleashes a vintage track that fits snugly in her catalog. Ever the underrated gem, Betty Who flexes her vocals onto a sparkling production that gives her freedom to soar higher than ever. She darts in between the musical layers and aims “for the sun,” as she sings in the chorus. “Don’t you give up on me!”
“That’s What You Get” – Anne-Marie
Annie-Marie struggles in the aftermath of a toxic breakup. “I’m never really good with trust / Thought you’d be different,” she sings over an acoustic-wrought arrangement. While firmly in the pop arena, she offers up something stripped back, reverberating around in the stratosphere to give her vocals a chance to shine truly. “What a waste,” she admits later on. She spits the bars as an exercise in exorcising her demons. She might forgive, but she’ll never forget.
“Happier” – Fickle Friends
Fickle Friends don’t get enough credit for their delicious pop music. “Maybe being happy is a choice…” she considers, all her thoughts bouncing around in her head. The weight of what that could mean rattles the pop band. “I couldn’t be happier than I am right now,” they later surmise over brittle production and a driving beat. Their words scatter, but the melody fully lodges in the listener’s brain, leaving quite an imprint.
“ADIDAS” – The Summer Set
The Summer Set is known for going arena-sized with its melodies, and “ADIDAS” is no exception. “It’s my favorite kind of high,” they sing of their need to hook up with a lover. “I’m not like any other guy,” Brian Logan Dales vows over blustering guitars. Their admissions of love and commitment are laced with a provocative lyric, wrapped up tightly in a pop-rock package.
“That Girl” – Tom Aspaul
“Wanna be that girl,” loops Tom Aspaul in his new song. “That Girl,” off his forthcoming Cabin Fever album, sparkles beneath a synth-pop sun and seems to carry a warmth that radiates from somewhere down inside. “I wish I had her confidence when I was that young,” he laments even as the beat drives hard and fast. “I never, ever got affection from the guys, no attention from anyone…” He spins his lyrical tires, struggling over the words, as though it could mean life or death.
