Frankie Ballard is back! After nearly a decade away, he’s back with a new album. The Messenger sees him taking up his guitar and laying into it with his signature vocals. “Shine” is an essential track, a country-rock entry that fits his voice like a glove. “When you’re up on that mountain, they’ll try to talk you down,” he sings. “And when they see your candle, they’ll try to blow it out.”
“Shine” serves as an important anthem we all could use right now. “Don’t you run for cover / Ain’t no where to hide,” he advises. “You know you got that light that’s bright, shine, shine shine.” Ballard is in rare form, not only on this track but on the entire album. He roars back to life as though it’s a proper reintroduction to the world. He stakes his claim; now, we need the country music establishment to pay attention again.
Ballard last released an album in 2016, titled El Rio. He then took a step back from the spotlight for personal reasons. For those who’ve stuck around, The Messenger is the perfect way to return to the music scene. It falls right in line with his style and tone for those big fans of “Sunshine and Whiskey” and the like.
