A serenity leaks from the folds of Oh Jeremiah‘s new song. “Rust” unpacks heavy themes about first kisses and praying before “we start to rust and the days start to get the best of us.” It’s equal parts lonesome and grateful for the smaller things in life. Horns crow in the arrangement, based on piano and light string work. “Someone come bless my heart,” the duo encourages.
It’s a solemn performance, among the duo’s finest recorded moments. “Time can be so unkind / I hope that wherever you are, you found some way to stay wild,” they harmonize in the chorus. The arrangement ebbs and flows as it cascades down the creek bed with a refreshing elixir. The days drag on, but the hope they uncover in nature around them keeps them going.
“People think that, because we’re married, we just wake up in our bedroom and just start singing like birds in a Disney movie. We don’t—but this song is as close as we’ve come to that in our marriage,” the duo writes on Instagram.
