“The world’s been bleeding me dry,” crows Stephen Stanley. His new song “This Far Down” is a real barn burner. Feeling like he belongs neither here nor there, he struggles to navigate raging emotions and that displaced ache in his bones. Guitars roar, and drums thrash around, with his voice swimming to the surface in the mix.

“I’ve been in it so deep / Everything’s not as it seems / Part of me has to die,” he admits. Sinewy, throaty vocals squeek out the message, evoking a sense of abandon and confusion. Stanley hits each beat with desperation, as though this song is his last chance. Maybe, it is. Or maybe it’s his cathartic way of accepting the present.

“This Far Down” came “during a time when I felt like I didn’t belong anywhere,” he says in a press statement. “I knew it wasn’t true, but the feeling was still there. Rejection is a part of life, and I tried to cope with it through anger — but that’s not a path that leads to life. Trusting God and focusing on what truly matters… that’s what helps me.”
