HOAX looks intensely inward, catching glimpses of themselves through layers of anxiety and uncertainty. With “Magnolia,” they reflect upon life, their journey over the last year, and what it means to be alive. As the lead-in to a new era, the bouncy number masks its meditative lyrics behind walls of jangly sounds.

“Early morning conversations, hanging on the edge of your bed / I don’t have a hesitation when you’re the one I see in my head,” sings Michael Raj. His voice is light and fluffy, allowing the lyrics to pour forth like a stream and land on the ear lobes. But the words remain heavy and strike a considerable blow to the heart.

On Instagram, the duo penned a lengthy post about the song’s intent. “You look inward and realize that sitting with yourself is much harder than distracting yourself with motion,” the duo says in an excerpt. “You are scatterbrained and you are doubtful now, you assess your 30 years as a foolish ode to unbreakable loyalty, which is often rarely warranted. You take a slight stupor into cynicism, before realizing it goes against every fiber of your being. And so you just be.”
