Cannon Brand and Justin Lane Gates come together to form Bottomland. Borrowing the rock-flecked country of the mid-2010s, their new song “Sorry State” pushes the pedal to the metal. Fiery yet familiar, the lovesick anthem sees the duo chasing love across state lines. “I’ve had a lot of miles to think on this dead-end road I’m on,” the duo sings.
The sorrow and loneliness propel Brand and Gates forward, as they barrel down the interstate between Texas and Tennessee. Dust puffs up from their tires, leaving nothing but faint reminders of where they’ve been in their rear view mirror. “Missing you, wishing you would save me from this sorry state,” rings the chorus.
Bottomland wears their influences on their sleeve. Sweltering guitars collide, giving “Sorry State” an arena-sized sensibility. It could very well be a Jason Aldean B-side, yet it carries their own unique stamp on modern country. Perfect for rolling down the widow, “Sorry State” will chase those breakup blues away this summer.
