Lindsay Ell stops for a moment to deliver a career-best vocal performance. “Unloving You” is a brittle ballad, as Ell’s voice comes crashing through the melody like a wrecking ball. “Imaginin’ my life without ya is like separatin’ oil and water / I know I gotta try, or else these tears will never dry,” she sings with a deep-throated rasp that clings to the ears.
In the chorus, she gathers what strength she has left to untangle herself from her ex. “Unlovin’ you takes unlearnin’ you / Unravelin’ the narrative I tried to tie us to,” she sings. “Unforgettin’ who I wanted to be before you broke my heart and made me start.” The lyrics pierce like a needle through thread. Ell’s voice has never sounded so discerning and so certain before, making for a potent emotional performance.
“I think a huge part of unloving someone is finding ways to unlearn the things you loved most,” Ell says in a press statement. “It’s one thing to hold onto happy memories, but it can be so complicated to slowly un-attach yourself to the things you were so closely woven to.”
