Jamal Roberts is officially your American Idol Season 23 winner!
The Mississippi native was crowned during the explosive live finale on Sunday, May 18, following what host Ryan Seacrest called the “biggest finale vote in show history,” with over 27 million votes cast—more than double last year’s total. Roberts triumphed over fellow finalists John Foster and Breanna Nix, who placed second and third, respectively.
To celebrate his emotional win, Roberts delivered a powerful rendition of Anthony Hamilton’s “Her Heart”, closing out his Idol journey with heart and soul.
Roberts’ journey began with a standout audition of Rick James’ “Mary Jane,” which earned a unanimous “yes” from the judges. Lionel Richie praised his storytelling instincts: “You got the voice and you know how to tell a story. Priceless.” Luke Bryan noted the “southern soulfulness” in his delivery, while Carrie Underwood advised him to “loosen up and let your body match your voice.”
The gym teacher from Mississippi continued to win over audiences and judges alike, culminating in his finale performances of Teeks’ “First Time” and The Temptations’ “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me).”
With American Idol set to return for Season 24 on ABC, Jamal Roberts’ story is only just beginning. And if this season taught us anything, it’s that authenticity, heart, and soul still reign supreme.
