Jordyn Shellhart‘s Primrose was among the best albums of 2023. It’s hard to believe that was two years ago. Since then, she’s compiled several singles, including her brand spanking new track “Strange Thoughts.” With percussion like a heartbeat, it deals heavily with a strange thought Shellhart has one late afternoon. “We were in love once,” she sings, before admitting she’d likely go to her ex’s funeral.

“I just had a strange thought that if you die, I’d probably wanna go to your funeral,” she sings over a pastel smattering of instruments. “I’d probably wanna hold your sister while she cries / Tell her that the eulogy was beautiful / I had a strange thought that I would want everyone to say I’m sorry for your loss.” The lyrics fall like needles, as the production swiftly sweeps by like sand along an ocean-lined beach. Perhaps, it’s not such a strange thought but a common one that enters our thoughts occasionally.

“Forgiveness can sometimes be a strange thought. Maybe, while driving down Their Middle Name Avenue past identical red brick houses,” she writes on Substack. “You might think, ‘If you died, I’d want to go to your funeral.’ And you might realize the street sign emblazoned with Their Middle Name does not make your bones burn hot with anger anymore.”
