“Freedom is a dream that will bring you to your knees,” huffs Malin Pettersen over a cosmic, psychedelic arrangement. With her song “Free,” she seeks absolution and, well, freedom from the world and life’s harsh conflicts. “Aren′t you tired, my friend?” she asks, provoking the listener to engage with the song’s core message.

“Be free for free / Let′s tie bonds, but don’t tie me,” she sings before returning to the refrain: “Freedom is a dream that will bring you to your knees in the middle of a dream for a little drop of peace…” The plainspoken lyrics are set dressing, allowing the listener to dig their meaty fingers into the production and heightened sense of reality. Pettersen’s voice is as feathery as ever, a counterweight to the tremendous motion of the melody.

“Free” anchors Pettersen’s new album, Wildflower, out everywhere on September 19.
