If you haven’t been living under a rock, you know Ryan Coogler’s vampiric tale Sinners has been the talk of the town – and for good reason. It’s a real barnburner that’s upended the box office. The accompanying soundtrack arrives as one of the best releases of the year. Among several must-hear tracks, Hailee Steinfeld‘s “Dangerous” blends pop and blues into an earth-scorching mix. It’s both an exhibit for Steinfeld and an exemplary musical showcase.
“Oh, I wish that I could be selfish, but I know what that means,” she sings, pulling on strings of regret ad blame. “That you would be out there hurting.” The giddy-up of percussion sets the propulsive mood of the song, somehow seductive and alarmingly hypnotizing.
While fitting inside Ludwig Göransson’s beautiful score, “Dangerous” also lives on its own. Co-written with Sarah Aarons, the song slots inside a “hauntingly beautiful score — the emotional tension and quiet unraveling shaped the entire song. It was about building something that could exist inside the world of the film, but also live on its own,” she says, noting how it relates to Michael B. Jordan’s Stack character and her turn as Mary. “It had to feel like Stack and Mary: the pain, the chemistry, the desire to live in a world where they could simply be together. There’s a vulnerability in these characters that I really connected with.”
