“Feels like the worst year is always the one you’re in,” Maren Morris begins her new baptismal. “Carry Me Through” jolts Morris awake, as she mulls over the last year of her life. Through the clouds, she can see a twinkle of goodness and warmth poking through. Despite it all, she manages to soldier on to her next destination. That’s resilience.

The song builds until the climactic, hopeful chorus. “Yeah, I know tomorrow’s gon’ come,” she sings. “Preaching to a choir of one / It’s taking me a while, I’ll get there soon…” She stands resolute as the storm rages around her, but the storm always ends, sooner or later. It’s just a matter of persevering for a time and never giving in.

“Carry Me Through” samples Morris’ forthcoming album, Dreamsicle, out May 9.
