Witnessing Mason Ramsey‘s voice is like hearing a giant redwood collapsing in the woods. Its reedy timber shatters the heart and leaves shredded heartstrings on the floor. As with his new song “Live Lonely,” Ramsey doesn’t let a single note go untouched as he moves from his lower register and up into his falsetto, where he shreds, yodels, and further crushes the listener’s pulsating red organ.

“And so I cry until there’s no more tears to dry,” he sings, cupping his voice around the melody. “And it’s gonna kill me ’cause I don’t wanna live lonely.” In dishing up an utterly timeless melody, Ramsey makes his claim that he’s a one-in-a-generation talent that the general public has taken sorely for granted. He trades off verses with Harper Grace, whose silky, soft alto allows a tender balance to Ramsey’s vocals.

Feeling very much something Hank Williams could have sung, “Live Lonely” carries with it the charm and glow that’s inherently of yesteryear. “[The song] is about a recent relationship of mine and talks about what I was going through in the moment,” Ramsey says in a statement. “Writing with Harper was a great experience; she really understood what I wanted to get across in this song. Her story is kind of similar to mine so that natural writing chemistry came easy.”
