Julia Michaels enlists Maren Morris for a new collaboration. “Scissors” opens up with echoing acoustic guitar before evolving into a lowkey, slicked-back pop jam. “You wanna say goodbye, I’m not crying rivers / If you wanna cut ties, I’ll get the scissors, baby,” sings Michael in the first swirling of the chorus. As an opener, it sets the fiery, emotional stage for the verses.
By the time verse one drops, the musicality shifts tremendously, while stilling holding onto a guitar that rumbles underneath. “When it comes to love, I’m pretty cautionary / Hurt your feelings, involuntary / When I say I’ll see you, I mean in Nev-uary,” scoffs Michaels. Morris is saved for the second verse, as she regales that “when it comes to lovers, I’m not repetitious,” she sings. “I know I look it, but I’m not that precious.”
On the song’s intent, Michaels and Morris spoke with Rolling Stone. “[This song] is a funny way of saying that I’m unbothered. My skin is thick. I’m not pressed if someone wants to leave. Half the time I don’t want them to stay either,” says Michaels. Morris echoes the sentiment, saying, “It’s about being nonchalant when a relationship fizzles, because, let’s be honest, most of them do. Not everything ends in heartbreak, but sometimes apathy and a lightheartedness, which sorely needs representation in break-up songs.”
