I got up in the middle of the night, around 1 in the morning, because I knew that if Santa was real, then no one could pull this off. I wrote a letter and I put it in my stocking, and I said, ‘if you were real Santa, please bring me a bell from your sleigh.’ I stuck the letter in there and I went straight to bed. When I woke up the next morning, there was a bell in my stocking, with a note that said ‘Keep believing Becca, I’m always here for you.’ I’ll never forget waking up to that note on Christmas morning.

My favorite Christmas tradition is to read a chapter a day of the book of Luke in the Bible. It leads you directly into the Christmas miracle of Jesus’ birth! As a Christian, I love to decorate the tree and make Christmas desserts, but ultimately Jesus is the reason for the season!

Every Christmas Eve, we would pull our mattresses into one room for a family sleepover. This was a tradition my mom started as a child, and it became a special part of our holiday. On Christmas morning, we’d wake up to find letters for each of us in our stockings—thoughtful notes we had written to one another before Christmas. Dinner always featured lamb, a nod to my dad’s British roots. Some of my favorite memories were from the years we spent Christmas in Kansas City. The citylights made everything feel magical and festive. And, of course, Christmas wasn’t complete without our nativity reenactments—though not all of them went as planned.

One of my favorite Christmas memories is decorating the tree with my family. We have this super old speaker that we always pull out so we can listen to our Christmas playlist while we decorate and we always sing along very loudly and off-key haha. Last year was a very special one. We found out the Lander Pet Connection here in Wyoming had only one dog left in all of their kennels. The staff was going to be away for the holidays except to come around to feed. So Linda and I drove down to Lander in a ridiculous snowstorm to take her home to foster for the holidays. Well… I guess that meant all of the holidays as we named her Holly and adopted her.

Growing up, my family would open 1 gift on Christmas Eve, which was always a pair of Christmas pajamas. We would take turns doing a fashion show, showing off our new PJs, and then we’d all pile into the car to drive around and look at Christmas lights. My family still does this to this day. It’s one of my favorite traditions!

For me, the holidays have always been about family. Growing up in Michigan, we’d gather at my parents’ house on Christmas Eve, with everyone coming together to celebrate. That tradition is still going strong—we spend the evening playing lots of games (White Elephant is my favorite!) and enjoying each other’s company. My favorite Christmas tradition that my family has done since I was a kid was every Christmas Eve we all gather as an entire family and my Aunt Naomi passes out Christmas pajamas that she picked for us for the traditional Christmas pajama party. This is special to me because it’s always so funny because everyone is always matching no matter how young or old and something we all enjoy and look forward to, every single year.

Every year we go to my parents house to open Christmas gifts, and we play a game with this ball made of saran wrap. My mom stuffs the ball with money, gift cards, and cool items, and you have to unwrap it with oven mittens on….while the other person is trying to roll doubles with a pair of dice. We always have fun, and look forward to that game every time!

Before Christmas we always go to these large outdoor botanical gardens not far from where I live. They turn the gardens into a winter wonderland with over a million lights and it’s amazing to walk through… especially in the snow. Then I love going to Capilano Suspension bridge as it has a great winter vibe.
What’s always key with my family is simply getting everyone together and hanging out. Doing things together. We have high ceilings in our living room, so we try and buy the tallest tree possible. Then being half German means Christmas Eve is super important and we host the entire family at our house. We pack everyone in, play some games and have a huge feast. This year there will be 16 people over. Christmas morning we always open stockings and just chill.
