It’s been 10 years since Frankie Ballard released his breakout album, Sunshine & Whiskey. After a lengthy hiatus, the performer returned to the music scene this year in a big way. Among his newest releases, “Dirty Church Clothes” finds Ballard getting his smoldering groove back. Heavy guitars thrash against one another, with percussion rumbling like the aftereffects of an earthquake. His voice has never sounded so clear and commanding.
“My Levi jacket has seen better days / Ain’t here to get it, just give out the praise,” he crows over a driving, soul-tearing beat. “My jeans are holey and my Bible is torn, but you know where I’ll be come Sunday morn.” Feeling the freedom of faith on his sleeve, Ballard takes the listener to church, ripping the roof off the joint.
With “Dirty Church Clothes,” co-written with Caleb Crosby and Tyler Bryant, the country singer-songwriter invites the listener to partake in the holy water-doused celebration. His jubilation erupts in the chorus. “It’s hallelujah, I ain’t strikin’ no pose / Came to wash my soul clean in some dirty church clothes,” he sings. “It’s hallelujah, roll Jordan roll / Came to wash my soul clean in some dirty church clothes.”
“Dirty Church Clothes” opens Ballard’s new three-track EP, which also includes “Freight Train of Trouble” and “Fenceless Freedom.”
